Endometriosis

With over 30 years’ experience we understand and has directly seen the challenges patients face living with endometriosis, including chronic pelvic pain and fertility challenges. It is disheartening that the average time for diagnosis of endometriosis is on average between 5-7 years.

We have established a multi-disciplinary approach to treating our endometriosis patients.  Our dedicated team comprises a Lead Gynaecologist, Adolescent/Paediatric Gynaecologist, Urologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon, Psychologist, Pain Specialist, and access to fertility services. Together, we work collaboratively to provide comprehensive care for various forms of endometriosis, including Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis, Ovarian Endometrioma, and Peritoneal Disease.

Through operative laparoscopy, we meticulously excise all visible disease, aiming for better outcomes and improved quality of life for our patients. Gynaecological Oncology/
Cancer Diagnostic Unit

We specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological cancers according to the standards and guidelines of the UK and aim to treat patients within 2 weeks from a gynaecological cancer diagnosis.

The centre provides treatment on a confirmed diagnosis of endometrial, vulval, ovarian and cervical cancer.

Our aim is to provide prompt access to the appropriate treatment once the initial diagnosis has been made, whether that treatment is medical or surgical.

Patients can be assured that the treatment and care provided by the centre is of an international standard and is made up of a multi-disciplinary specialist team who ensures that each patient receives the best treatment and care plan. The treatment and care plan involves the patient and a multi-disciplinary team who meets to discuss the patient’s care and allow for planning and on-going assessment of their treatment.

With patients who present with post-menopausal bleeding (bleeding after menopause) there is a chance of cancer, and the centre operates a triaging service.

This includes a one stop post-menopausal bleeding Clinic where the patient’s symptoms and concerns are assessed, with a view of providing them with a range of suitable and appropriate treatment options. This includes outpatient hysteroscopy (camera in the womb) which is the gold standard in the UK. We also offer Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy for treatment of early-stage Endometrial Cancer.

Benign Gynaecology

When it comes to menstrual problems we offer one stop menstrual clinics. This one stop service allows for the patient to be diagnosed and the appropriate treatment administered.

One of our aims is to decrease the amount of hysterectomies done by offering new hysteroscopic surgical techniques like Endometrial Resection and Ablation.

These new techniques are day case procedures with the added benefit of less complications than a hysterectomy and allowing the patient to recovery much quicker. Patients who have undergone such procedures have resumed normal activities quicker than those patients who would have undergone a hysterectomy.

Laparoscopic Surgery

We offer the most comprehensive service in Gynaecological Laparoscopic Surgery. (minimal access/key hole surgery) for benign disease like Fibroids, Endometriosis and Early Stage Endometrial Cancer.

This is associated with a shorter hospital stay, less analgesia and a quicker recovery.

This includes Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, Laparoscopic Assisted Myomectomy, Laparoscopic Cystectomy and Ophrectomy. Laparoscopic hysterectomy of Early Stage Endometrial Cancer. Common problems like ovarian cysts, endometriosis and fibroids will be treated by minimal access (laparoscopic) surgery.

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy

When it comes to diagnostic procedures, it’s not always necessary to undergo them in a hospital setting. At our centre, we offer outpatient diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy right in our office, providing several benefits such as quicker recovery time and the avoidance of general anaesthesia and cost savings.

During these procedures, patients are typically given simple analgesia like Ibuprofen and Paracetamol for pain management. In some cases, local anaesthesia may be used, and sedation is rarely required. Our centre prides itself on having the most advanced hysteroscopic service in Barbados.

We offer a comprehensive diagnostic service where we can identify and diagnose any abnormalities in the uterine cavity right in our office. Additionally, we are the only centre on the island that provides operative hysteroscopy services in an office setting. This means that we can remove polyps without the need for hospitalisation.

For more complex cases, we also offer hysteroscopic resection of fibroids in the uterine (endometrial) cavity. This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, allowing us to address the issue and potentially avoid the need for a hysterectomy. Emergency Gynaecology

The centre runs a Gynaecological Emergency service, the first of its kind in Barbados. This emergency services are designed to treat a wide range of gynaecological emergencies without the patient having to wait to get a routine appointment to see a specialist.

Our emergency specialists are on hand to diagnosis and treat the patient at the emergency centre.

We manage all gynaecological emergencies like early bleeding in pregnancy, hyperemesis(vomiting) in pregnancy, abdominal pain in pregnant women and non-pregnant women, lumps and bumps below the belt and menstrual problems, emergency contraception and post-natal women. In addition, chronic problems can be seen as well like endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain.

Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit

The centre operates an Early Pregnancy Assessment Service. This service provides treatment for women with bleeding and abdominal pain in early pregnancy with prompt diagnosis and treatment whether conservative, medical or surgical.

The centre offers reassurance ultrasound scans for those women who will have difficulties in their current pregnancy or previous ones before and may want some reassurance that everything is ok, we are here to help them through this journey.

Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology

At JRB Medical Centre we provide a specialist service to care and support young girls, adolescent women and differently able girls with their gynaecological conditions.

This is a specialist service and is rare to find in developed countries and we are proud to offer this service to our younger population. This service not only provides diagnosis and treatment but also aim to educate this generation on gynaecological matters that are personal to them.

We recognise that moving from children’s health care to adult health care can be a daunting experience and we aim to make this process as straightforward as possible. We have a dedicated female team who provides paediatric gynaecology services.
